IMSH 2027
The CBE Overture: A Consensus Forum on Simulation in CBE

January 22-23, 2027 | New Orleans, Louisiana

Competency-based education (CBE) asks programs to show that learners can perform, not only that they finished the coursework. Simulation is well suited to that. In many programs, though, simulation sits outside the competency framework, run as separate activities instead of planned across the curriculum.

The CBE Overture brings educators, simulation operations professionals, learners, leaders, scholars, and corporate partners together to work on that problem. Participants will develop consensus recommendations for simulation-grounded competency-based education (SG-CBE), which will inform the continued development of the SG-CBE framework.

Friday: Choose your track

Each track is a breakout group. You'll pick one.

1
Integrating Simulation Across the Competency-Based Curriculum
Mapping simulation to outcome competencies and placing it across the curriculum to develop and assess the abilities needed for safe, effective practice.
2
Simulation Across Developmental Stages
Using simulation experiences that increase in complexity, responsibility, and learner independence over time.
3
Simulation for Adaptive Competency Development
Using learner performance data, deliberate practice, mastery learning, coaching, and different simulation modalities to support individualized learning pathways with common outcome expectations.
4
Simulation as Competency-Focused Instruction
Defining the instructional practices of competency-focused simulation, including prebriefing, facilitation, feedback, debriefing, reflection, deliberate practice, reassessment, and faculty development.

Saturday: Bring your perspective

All Saturday groups explore: Simulation as a Source of Longitudinal Competency Data ALL SATURDAY GROUPS EXPLORE Simulation as a Source of Longitudinal Competency Data

You'll join the group that matches your role or interests:

Learners
Faculty and Teachers
Educational Leaders, Scholars, and Administrators
Simulation Operations Professionals and Directors
Patients and Populations

The groups will discuss how simulation evidence can support feedback, progression, entrustment, remediation, and readiness-for-practice decisions, and how to protect psychological safety, equity, and the learning function of simulation in the process.

What you'll leave with

A clearer understanding of how CBE differs from time- and content-based education
A framework for deciding where, when, and how simulation fits into competency development and assessment
Strategies for using simulation data alongside workplace-based and other assessment data
A realistic sense of the faculty skills, infrastructure, policies, and safeguards SG-CBE requires
Connections with colleagues across professions and roles
A say in the consensus recommendations
